MANAGER PROFILE
Jean Thomas
Jean who lives in Fitzwilliam is 60 years old and now retired. She first started playing darts in the Naafi with her future husband when she was a Lance Corporal in the Womens’ Royal Army corps. Over the years she has played local league, superleague and county as well as doing much of the competition circuit. She does still try to play but is currently being restricted by a shoulder problem. She initially got her Yorkshire call up in 1980 and has been involved with Yorkshire ever since. She joined the committee in 1990 and since then has held positions as Minutes Secretary, League Secretary, Youth Manager, Treasurer, General Secretary and now Ladies team manager. In addition to her commitment to Yorkshire Jean became England tournament director last year.
Her high points in darts have been playing her first county match, becoming Ladies team manager and finally becoming an England director.
Her low point has been not being able to play due to her shoulder injury.
As far as ambition within darts is concerned, she says she has achieved them all.
For a personal comment Jean told me “It’s a fantastic sport and I have made absolutely loads of friends for which I will always be grateful, there have been times when it has kept me sane. Once it’s in your blood, it is there for life, especially Yorkshire blood”
My opinion of Jean is that she almost appears to have dedicated her life to darts, she is 110% committed to Yorkshire and darts. She will offer help and advice to anyone or any cause connected with the sport, but don’t ever think she is an easy pushover when it comes to making those awkward decisions because she will always stand by her beliefs unless you can prove her wrong. She is always ready to stand up and be counted if necessary.
