Yorkshire played host to Lancashire for their last match of the season and as ever it was a true battle of the Roses which lived up to everybody’s expectations and produced some brilliant performances to thrill the massive crowd of spectators.
The Ladies ‘B’ got underway with the welcome return of Wendy Arthur who has been suffering a shoulder injury for over a year, it was also her long awaited 100th game and although she played very well to pull back from a 2- 0 deficit to make it 2 all she couldn’t quite get that 5th leg. Next it was the turn of Rhian Barton who needed to show true Yorkshire grit to pull off her 3-2 win to make it all square. Lyn Horne then lost the next game 3-0 to when she came up against ‘on form’ Maria Ronson. Mandy McKenzie then equalised for us as she put in an excellent performance to win 3-2 after trailing 2-0 she also earned herself the lady of the match award with a 19.46 average. Tanya Anderson then got her first Yorkshire win to put us 3 – 2 up and give us hope of a victory, however it was not to be as Ann Waslin lost the last game, so it ended all even with 3 points each.
The Mens ‘B’ got off to a poor start when John Mooring gave a very under par performance and lost 3-1, however Peter Jacques hit straight back with a man of the match set winning 3-1 with an 29.88 average. Then it was the turn of Dan Timmins who suffered his second county defeat to leave us 2-1 down, but in true Yorkshire form we then hit back with consecutive wins from Brian Dawson, Wayne Holland, Steve Stacey and Dave Howells. Graham Usher then lost the next set, but one of this seasons new players Kev Shaw, once again showed his potential when he won with a 29.14ave. John Utley and Chris Gill both lost their sets but Rus Lockwood took the last set with a convincing 3-0 victory giving Yorkshire a 7-3 victory which was also enough to make us the Men’s ‘B’ champions.
The Ladies ‘A’ started well when Rachel Sheard won the first set 3-1 but this was soon over shadowed as both Janice Lambert and Nicky Deakin lost their sets. There was a glimmer of hope as Karen Lawman won the next set 3-0 with a 23.12 ave giving her lady of the match. But that was the end of the points for our ladies as both Cindy Jennings and Pamela Haigh both lost giving us a 4-2 loss as a final result.
In the Mens ‘A’ Keith Flint lost the first set against Paul Whitworth who delighted the Lancashire supports with cries of BOOSH each time he hit a 180. We then took the next 4 sets with wins from John Dean (29.61), Tony Hull (25.44), Dean Winstanley (29.97) and Martin Atkins(26.84). Steve O’Donnell and James Wilson then both lost their sets, but Scott Waites gave us a 2 point lead again as he won his set with a 29.98 ave. Next it was the turn of newly promoted Mick Ridge who unfortunately didn’t find his finishes and lost 3-0. Craig Buzzard then played magnificently to win 3-0 with a 31.31ave to give him man of the match award. The final 2 sets gave us darts of a high standard when Garry Thompson took on Andy Gudeon and John Walton played Dave Chisnell but in both instances Lancashire were victorious which gave us a 6-6 all draw and an overall result for the weekend of a draw, which seemed a very fitting result for probably the best two ‘home grown’ county teams in the premier division.

The Anglo Celtic cup was a new event to the darting calendar which was pioneered by England and Wales and saw county teams of 6 men and 3 women battle it out for honours. It was a disappointment that Yorkshire struggled to enter 2 teams into this event, however they did us proud when the Yorkshire A topped the table in their group to gain entry into the last 4. However they were beaten 5-4 by Cheshire in the semi-finals, but the whole weekend was a thoroughly enjoyable event and can’t wait for next year to do it all again, when I am sure Yorkshire will be able to enter more teams.
